Affiliate marketing is on the rise and coming into its own as a strong marketing tool for companies building a stronger or longer lasting Internet presence or business. Getting started requires research, planning and commitment.
To get started in affiliate marketing, a company builds a web site - signs up or signs on with reputable, profitable affiliate sites. Next, links are set up to drive traffic (and hopefully sales) to the affiliate site(s). Assigned or contracted affiliates get rewarded for directing traffic to the site through pay-per-click (PPC), cost-per-click (CPC), or cost-per-sale (CPS).
Four top affiliate types include: online poker sites, online mortgage companies, higher education and online training sites, and online retail sales. Four of the top and most well known benefactors of affiliate marketing are amazon.com, monster.com, yahoo.com and google.com.
Affiliate marketing has had its share of success. Nonetheless, it is an industry trying to find and implement standards, trying to apply a code-of-conduct and trying on a more fitting name. Affiliate marketing is often associated with network or multi-level marketing. To help separate it from network marketing - one proposed re-name is Performance Marketing. Getting involved with an industry still trying to find a solid base, it helps to follow a few tips when evaluating good affiliate programs and to better ensure profitable results.
1. Read and learn all the terminology, technology, terms and conditions, background, and what the future holds for affiliate marketing.
2. Research the affiliate program market and select appropriate, respectable and profitable programs.
3. Develop a business and marketing plan - be sure to include a mission statement in both plans. Also include all the marketing details for promoting the affiliate programs.
4. Be aware of the risks and plan for the bumps in the road that can and will occur.
5. Join a trusted affiliate network for support and for promoting through the partners network.
6. Choose the payment plan carefully (CPS or PPC) - which in the end may help determine which affiliate sites will fulfill the business plan.
7. Select affiliates that offer high quality products or services. The Internet has made the world even smaller - a bad reputation is easy to build and even easier to spread around the world. Stay away from affiliate programs that have sites with questionable products, services or practices.
8. Make quality not quantity top priority. This tip is related to tip #7. Select quality sites to promote instead of quantity of sites and profits will be higher than you think.
